Application of Jute Geotextile: A Bioengineering Technique for Soil Conservation and Greening of Non-Culturable Lateritic Waste Lands,
West Medinipur District, West Bengal.

Summary of Achievement:
  • Restoration of soil particle movement with the runoff water during the rainy season in the target area. Monitoring of soil particle movement with runoff water during the rainy season, proves significant variation of soil particle movement before and after laying of Jute geotextile; before and during cropping / agricultural activity during rainy season.

     

  • Sediment Analysis and observation on change in fertility status of soil observed before and after laying of geotextile (over a period of 17 months). Soil texture analysis (0-5 cm depth) before & after laying of Jute Geotextile (over a period of 6 months). As suggested in the GMW, held in November 2008, several observation were made of fluctuating soil moisture regime and impact of jute geotextile as a mulching material on soil misture control.
  • Supported Kharif crops (Maize, Green gram, Black Gram, Cow Pea) through intercropping technique and ground nut, pulses and other vegetables. Though the yield was not satisfactory (30-37% of block average), due to delayed start, improved yield could be achieved (41-59%) in the second year after utilizing the total monsoon period. Other factors that led to improved growth of crops within the experimental plot are conservation of soil moisture by the geotextile; addition of organic mater by the decomposing fabric; addition of organic matter by the roots of the plants crops produced deuring 2008; adequate supply of Nitrogen in the soil by the leguminous varieties of crops like green gram and black gram; preservation of moisture by spreading remains of plants, leafs, straws etc. during the Rabi season; irrigation and moistering of the land during the rabi season.
  • Representatives of Soil conservation wing under the Department of Agriculture, GoWB, Secretary, Panchayet Department, GoWB, National Institute of Jute and Allied Fibre technology, NIRJAFT, a wing of ICAR are taking interest and have visited the site.
  • Created employment opportunity for 500 local villagers (non-worker, marginal worker and agricultural labourer). Empowered a local person as Caretaker of the plot, based on the advice of the Panchayet Samiti of Garhbeta I block. Empowered two agricultural labourers as field workers in the plot.
  • Local government has already expressed their interest to bring more areas to be managed in similar way, District Administration is interested to share the labour cost through NREGS, if more area is managed in similar way.
